Hestor – Ping Test measures how long a network round trip takes. To do that it has to put packets on the network, so unlike a purely offline tool it is not silent — but what it sends is narrow, and this page describes it precisely.

What Leaves Your Device

Two things, and only when you press a button in the app.

The first is the probe itself. With the ICMP method the app sends echo requests — the same packets the ping command uses — to the host shown on the screen. With the TCP method it opens a connection to that host's port and closes it again. The probe carries a sequence number and filler bytes; it contains no identifier for you, your device or the app.

The second is name resolution. If you type a name rather than an address, the system resolver on your device translates it, which means your network's configured DNS server sees that name. This is the same lookup any app or browser performs, and Hestor has no resolver of its own.

Nothing else is transmitted. The app has no HTTP client, no analytics SDK, no advertising framework, no crash reporter and no server of ours to talk to.

Who Receives It

Only the host you chose, plus the routers along the path, which is unavoidable for any network traffic. The list of preset destinations in the app is a convenience — public DNS resolvers and well-known sites — and none of them is affiliated with Hestor. Their own policies govern what they log about incoming packets, exactly as they would for any other traffic from your connection.

What Stays on the Phone

Three things, all in the app's private storage:

The history is cleared from the History tab, a single test is deleted from its own screen, and a destination you added is removed from its row. Deleting the app removes the lot.

Permissions

None. Hestor does not ask for the camera, the microphone, location, contacts, notifications or the photo library, and it does not read your address book, your clipboard or your installed apps.

Children

The app is a diagnostic instrument for network connections, not a product for children under 13, and it does not knowingly gather information from them. As it gathers no personal information from anyone, this holds for every user.
